How To Get Started with SEO for a Local Business

Search engine optimization can be confusing for a small business owner. In this post I’ll give you just the basics you need to get started.

First, make sure you have good website hosting. I like to use a company called Siteground. Why is good hosting important? Because they can make your website load faster, they can easily install an SSL certificate, and, this one is important, they can have a backup plan for your website in case it goes down for whatever reason.

So get good hosting for your online business.

In terms of links, the very first links to your website should be citations or business listings. These are sites like Google, Yelp, BBB, etc. Do a Google search for ‘Moz local listings check’. You can enter your business and see all the places that you need to go a create a business listing.

You can also go to a company called Bright Local and they can create these business listings for you.

There are a ton of places that will create these listings for you. Most do a terrible job. I would stay away from companies like Yext, and Yelp. They are terrible and you don’t need them.

After you have create a bunch of business listings (start off by creating 25 – 50), you next need to create a bunch of social profiles. These are profiles on sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.

You can go to a website called Knowem. They have a free tool there. All you have to do is enter in your business name and it will give you a list of all the social media sites that your brand name is available. When you do this search, you may find that on a lot of site, your brand name is not available. Thatís ok. Do this trick, just add a number to your brand name.

Here’s an example, if you can’t get AcmePlumbing on Twitter, try AcmePlumbing1, or AcmePlumbing7, or whatever. Just add something to the end any you can usually find something available. And this will still work, it will still be relevant for your brand name.

And that’s the major purpose of all these business listing and social media accounts. It’s to make sure you cover the first page of the search result for your brand name. Dominating or owning the entire first page of the search results for your brand name is the first step in search engine optimization.

A brand search is one of the most common searches in Google. You gotta show up for your brand. This simple guide tells you exactly how to do it.
